[미묘한영어] such as 앞 뒤 콤마 사용법

아래 규칙들은 such as 와 함께 콤마를 사용하는 용법에 대해 말해준다. 

No comma before—Don't put a comma before such as if it introduces an essential phrase (one that defines or identifies the word it modifies): 

such as 와 함께 오는 문장이 전체 문장에서 필수적일 경우 (an essential phrase, a restrictive clause, 한적정 관계절, 제한적 관계절) such as 앞에 콤마를 사용하지 않는다. 

• Hockey players such as Sidney Crosby are superstars. 

위 문장에서 such as Sidney Crosby 라는 부분이 없을 경우, Hockey players are superstars 라는 문장은 이상한 문장이 되어버린다. 모든 하키 플레이어가 슈퍼스타는 아니다. 여기서 such as Sidney Crosby 라는 부분은 문장에서 말하고자 하는 hockey players 가 어떤 사람인지 정의한다. 

Comma needed before—Put a comma before such as if it introduces a phrase that is giving additional, secondary information:

such as 다음에 오는 문장이 추가적이거나 부연설명일 경우 ( additional information, secondary information, a non-restritive clause 비제한적 관계절) such as 앞에 콤마(,)를 사용한다. 보통 우리가 such as 를 '예를 들어~'와 같은 형태로 사용할때는 이 경우에 속한다.  

• A number of legendary Canadian players, such as Maurice Richard, Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky, have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

위에서 'such as Maurice Richard, Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky, ' 라는 문장이 없어도 전체 문장은 여전히 말이 된다. A number of legendary Canadian players have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. 라는 문장은 어색함이 없다. legendary 라는 단어가 이미 어떤 players 들인지 설명하고 있고 such as 뒤에 오는 문장은 추가적인 정보 (예시)를 제공할 뿐이다. such as 가 이끄는 문장이 전체 문장에서 중간에 위치할 때는 저렇게 , such as..., 와 같이 such as 문장 끝부분에도 콤마(,) 를 쓴다. 

No comma after—Do not put a comma between such as and the example(s) it introduces:

such as 뒤에 바로 such as, 식으로 콤마를 쓰지는 않는다. 

Incorrect: Hockey teams often owe a large part of their success to their talented goaltenders, such as, Vancouver's Roberto Luongo and Montréal's Carey Price.

Correct: Hockey teams often owe a large part of their success to their talented goaltenders, such as Vancouver's Roberto Luongo and Montréal's Carey Price.
